A snowy Monday in E. Meadow

Posted

A snowy Monday forecast could mean dangerous travel conditions throughout the day in East Meadow.

The National Weather issued a winter weather advisory for Nassau County, which will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Officials said that, beginning at sunrise, 2 to 4 inches of snow will start to accumulate across the region.

Periods of heavy snowfall will limit visibility for motorists and make roads slippery, officials said. In addition, 13 to 18 miles-per-hour winds, with gusts of up to 30 miles-per-hour, might blow snow across roads and walkways.

The latest wintery forecast comes days after a snowstorm closed East Meadow schools on Friday. However, classes were in session on time across the East Meadow School District on Monday morning.

The East Meadow Public Library is open.

Hempstead Town officials did not close any local facilities or suspend services Monday morning. The Norman J. Levy Park and preserve in Merrick is closed due to hazardous trail conditions.

Long Island Rail Road officials said that while the weather might have caused minor delays during the morning rush, they expected near-normal service throughout the day and “don’t see any difficulties on the p.m. commute. Salvatore Arena, an LIRR spokesman, said commuters should give themselves extra time getting to the stations.

“It could be more treacherous driving to the station and walking, than the train ride itself,” he said. “Our crews were out early this morning clearing the stations and we haven’t had any serious difficulties. We just want to play it safe with speed.”
