Amherst Street being redone

Roadwork is underway on Amherst Street in East Meadow, just west of Newbridge Road and north of Speno Park.

The $350,000 Town of Hempstead Road Improvement project will include new asphalt pavement, wheelchair-accessible pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, and new curbs and driveway aprons.

Work is expected to be completed in the early fall, said Town of Hempstead spokeswoman Susan Trenkle-Pokalsky.

Town officials said that the work may cause some disruption of traffic on nearby streets. “We respectfully ask neighbors for their patience and understanding when work begins on their streets,” said Councilman Gary Hudes. “We’re confident that neighbors will be pleased with the final results of the project.”

The work is being funded through the town’s capital program. “Enhancing safety and quality of life is paramount,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “Through our ongoing capital program, we’ll continue to make improvements that will benefit our neighborhoods for years to come.”
