An open mind to Romney, but he didn't measure up

At one time in his life, Romney was pro-choice, even contributing to Planned Parenthood. Now he opposes abortions for women except in the case of rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in danger. His running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, has temporarily embraced Romney’s views, but has sponsored legislation to have life declared to take place at the moment of conception. Romney seems to cling to the idea that a woman’s place is in the home, an idea that dates back decades.

Like him or not, Vice President Joe Biden is a representative of middle America. He speaks loudly for the values of the struggling middle class. Romney’s choice of Ryan is frightening for this country. Ryan has already proven that he favors the dismantling of Medicare and every program that helps the little people. With such great possibilities as Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels or Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Romney chose the Neanderthal, Ryan.

So maybe Barack Obama is no longer the knight in shining armor that we expected. But I know he’s done a lot of good things to bring us back from the brink of disaster. He genuinely cares about the middle class that made my political career possible. In my mind, whatever Obama has done over the past three-plus years will no doubt bring new dividends in the next four years.

I started out this election cycle thinking that Romney might be a good alternative to Obama. Instead he turned out to be the worst possible choice for the America I love.
