Hadassah continues to grow

On Sunday, May 4, the group will be participating in Hadassah’s annual walk-a-thon in Long Beach to benefit stem cell research.

In addition, the group also fundraises for Young Judea summer camps, which serves thousands of children from a variety of Jewish backgrounds from all over the United States, and participates in Check It Out for Adults, a national breast cancer awareness program for women and men. In the past, members have gone into local high schools with medical professionals to educate children on the importance of screening and early detection.

Susan Weiss, a two-time Myrtle Wreath honoree who has been a member of Hadassah for 21 years, said, “It’s a wonderful organization that does so much for so many. I’ve met the most interesting people.” Weiss’s daughter, Michele, who is also a member, was honored last year as the organization’s “Great Communicator.”

The group’s monthly meetings often features guest speakers who educate members on Jewish and health education. But the organizations also hosts social events to add variety to meetings — last month they held a “Put a Little Spring in Your Salad” cooking event.

To learn more about the local chapter, Weiss encouraged residents to check out the group’s new Facebook page, called East Meadow Simcha Chapter of Hadassah.
