Halloween for the dogs

Second annual pet costume contest at Eisenhower Park

Halloween is a season of creativity. The late October holiday affords people the opportunity to craft original and elaborate costumes. Many choose iconic, well-known characters. Others gain inspiration from pop culture.

And some choose to go one step further and dress up not only themselves, but their own pets.

Nassau County gave residents the chance to do just that, when it hosted the second annual Barkfest in Eisenhower Park, a pet costume contest comprising hundreds of animals — mostly dogs.

The costume contest took place last Sunday near the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. Some people dressed their dogs as a half-tiger, half-dog hybrid, another dressed theirs like Homer Simpson, and one resident turned their dog into a punk-rock pup.

Local animal rescue and advocacy groups were also on hand to celebrate the event.
