A Town of Hempstead sanitation worker was killed in a crash involving two town sanitation trucks at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Chestnut Street in East Meadow on June 20.

According to Nassau County police, Jarred Newallo, 25, of Hempstead, was on the back of a sanitation truck, attempting to guide a second truck through a narrow street. A parked vehicle complicated the matter, police said, and the two trucks collided, leaving Newallo severely injured.

The accident happened at 9:25 a.m. Newallo was taken to the Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m.

After the accident, Prospect Avenue was closed between Stark and Maple avenues, and Chestnut Avenue was closed between Prospect and Nostrand avenues until 2:15 p.m., while county police conducted an investigation. They determined that no criminality was involved.

“Today is a very sad day for the Hempstead Town family,” Town Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement. “A valued member of our workforce who was employed by the township’s Sanitation Department was involved in a tragic accident, and has succumbed to his injuries. We are deeply saddened, and the family of the victim is in our thoughts and prayers.”
