East Meadow’s Christopher Melnyczuk was one of 20 SUNY Oneonta students who represented the school at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 22 to 26. SUNY Oneonta represented two countries: Oman and Turkey.

Melnyczuk, as part of the team that represented Oman, was recognized by conference organizers as a Distinguished Delegation, the second-highest honor of the conference.

And with teammate Casey Schneider, Melnyczuk also received special recognition for the high quality of their position paper.

Over the course of two conferences, National Model United Nations-New York brings together more than 5,000 university students from around the world to discuss global concerns in a real-world context. By discussing and debating current world issues from the perspectives of the countries they represent, students gain a better understanding of the inner workings of the U.N. and develop skills in diplomacy and compromise.

Melnyczuk is majoring in communication studies and political science at SUNY Oneonta.
