Hector Bejarano, who was arrested on May 13 and charged with murdering his wife by "striking her in the head multiple times with a heavy object," was formally indicted by a grand jury on June 23, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas.

Mirian Bejarano, 52, was found dead in her Prospect Avenue home on April 28. Police responded to the home around 4 p.m., and found her lying on the floor unconscious. Neighbors told the Herald that police officers lined the street for a full day after her death. Police called Mirian's death a murder one day later, and said they were in the process of tracking down family members.

Hector, 53, was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder, an A violent felony; and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, an A misdemeanor.

If convicted of the top charge, he faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. He is due back in court on July 9.

Bejarano is represented by Dana Grossblatt, who could not be reached for immediate comment.

“Despite the tremendous gains women have made at home and in the workplace, many still live in the shadow of domestic violence and abuse,” Singas said in a press release. “The alleged actions of this defendant are despicable, and cost an innocent mother her life. My office will zealously prosecute this case.”
