Library promotes early literacy

East Meadow Public Library staff members Jude Schanzer, Charlie Foss, and Donna Marie Hoch went to the Nassau University Medical Center on March 24 to help launch an early literacy initiative in the hospital’s pediatric waiting room.

The group, which also included Chris Mara of the Uniondale Library, was invited by Dr. Dina Lieser and Ikadshi Thukral, of NUMC pediatrics to work with young patients waiting to be seen by doctors.

The children were given books, coloring pages, crayons, bookmarks and pencils. “Bats at the Library” by Brian Lies was read while the children waited for their appointments. Parents were also able to start the process of getting library cards for themselves and their children.

Staff of the Uniondale Library will be returning to continue the program on April 7. East Meadow Public Library staff will follow soon after.
