While Run With the Rams was wrapping up in Salisbury early Saturday, another highly anticipated community event was getting ready to take off in East Meadow — the Baseball Softball Association Little League Parade.

Hundreds of young athletes and their families met at Veterans Park pool and marched to the Little League complex on Merrick Avenue under sunny skies to kick off the new season.

The East Meadow Fire Department’s Bag Pipes & Drums Corp. led the parade, followed by the athletes in EMBSA’s Challenger Program.

Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonsalves, State Sen. Kemp Hannon and Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad were on hand to lend their support. Local leaders Mitchell Allen, of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, and Kevin Kamper, of East Meadow Kiwanis, also joined in on the festivities. Kiwanis made a cash donation to the Challenger Program, according to EMBSA Commissioner Stephen La Sala.

Afterwards, participants enjoyed a barbecue at the Little League complex, and the winners were decided in the annual banner contest.
