Scouts’ community projects receive praise

Michael Walsh and Billy Nolan of East Meadow Boy Scout Troop 123 were honored at a recent ceremony at Calvary Lutheran Church for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

For his project, Walsh renovated the faculty lounge at the Genesis School on Newbridge Road, which serves children and young adults with autism. With the goal of creating a comfortable space for school faculty to relax and decompress from their duties as teachers and teacher’s aides, Walsh coordinated the painting of the space, the construction of a countertop and cabinets, and refinishing of closets.

Nolan, for his project, built a covered bulletin board/information center for fishermen at Norman J. Levy preserve in Merrick. The information center will help patrons better understand the area, as well as allow the park rangers to post rules, regulations and upcoming events. Nolan also organized a cleanup of the preserve and added rod holders to the pier.

Norma Gonsalves, the presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature, attended Walsh and Nolan’s Eagle Court of Honor and presented each with a Nassau County citation. “The projects that Michael and Billy undertook displayed their dedication to the Scouts as well as their community,” said Gonsalves. “Both of these projects will go a long way in helping their fellow community members’ quality of life.”
