Bring your running shoes down to McVey Elementary School, on 2201 Devon Street, this Sunday for the second annual McVey 5K, a 5K race and 1-mile fun run. The event will kick off Red Ribbon Week, a schoolwide initiative that promotes health, wellness and drug awareness through various programs and assemblies.
The race was started last year by Michael Simone, a phys. ed. teacher at McVey and a 1997 East Meadow High School graduate, and Theresa Arnone, a school social worker.
The inaugural race drew about 500 people, approximately 375 of which competed in the two races. The event raised $9,000.
The majority of the funds raised will once again be donated to the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, which will use the money to provide services directly into the East Meadow community. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the McVey Parent Teacher Association.
Participants will receive a race t-shirt, and the day’s festivities will also include a DJ, post-race bagels, raffles and rewards for all finishers.

Interested participants can still register online on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at http://mcvey5k.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=3346aspx?id=3346.
