The end of an era at East Meadow High

East Meadow High School seniors marked the next chapter of their lives on Sunday, as, surrounded by friends and family, they formally graduated from the school where they’ve spent a large part of their last four years.

The ceremony, which began at 11:30 a.m. on the school’s football field, was laced with performances by senior chorus members and a number of poignant addresses.

Superintendent Louis DeAngelo, who is in his final year as superintendent, spoke to the graduates about the importance of respecting others.

Valedictorian Nicole Newberger, rather than detailing her own personal experience of high school, shared what her classmates said were the most important things they learned at East Meadow High — forming friendships, exploring opportunities and learning new skills. “The true importance of high school,” Newberger said, “wasn’t just the academic knowledge it provided … I’ll remember all the amazing people I’ve met along the way.”

Salutatorian Allyson Clark touted the accomplishments of her class in her address, from the marching band and wrestling team to the countless hours of community service the class performed. “Being a student at East Meadow has taught me to never give up,” she said, “even when defeat seems inevitable,” she said.

The diplomas were then distributed amid rousing applause and cheers from those in attendance. And of course, once official, the students sent their mortarboards into the sky.
