Assemblyman Brian Curran (Lynbrook, 21st A.D.) hosted an inaugural Run for Heroes 5k race to benefit local veterans last Sunday, starting and finishing at Hewlett Point Beach. More than $25,000 was raised, and all of proceeds from the race will be going to local organizations, including VFW and American Legion posts.

The event had more than 90 sponsors. 270 people were registered to race, and 209 people finished.

The first place winner was Lance Peter, of Freeport, with a time of 00:21:01.1. John Phelan, of Atlantic Beach, took second place; and Patrick Henry, of Baldwin, placed third.

“This is the first year we hosted a race like this to benefit our local veterans,” Curran said. “The turnout and local support for this was amazing and we couldn’t be any happier. What started as an idea grew into this awesome event for our community vets. I want to thank all over our event and individual runner sponsors for their generous support. This was something small we could do to help give back to our military men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms in this great nation. It was very evident after today that people didn’t just stand with our veterans, they ran for them!”
