East Meadow residents Stephen Clark and Robert Treimanis were killed Monday afternoon, when a car they were driving collided with a landscaping truck on North Jerusalem Road, on the North Bellmore-East Meadow border, according to Nassau County police.

Clark, 20, was driving a 2000 Honda Accord west on North Jerusalem Road just before 2 p.m., police said, near the intersection of Roxboro Court, with Treimanis, 19, in the passenger seat. The car crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a J. Canas Landscaping company dump truck, which was towing a tandem wheel trailer.

Nassau County Emergency Services and members of the North Bellmore and East Meadow fire departments extricated Clark and Treimanis from their car. Police said that fire department ambulances also took the unidentified driver of the truck, along with his two passengers, to a local hospital.

NCPD ambulances rushed Treimanis and Clark to the Nassau University Medical Center. They were both pronounced dead by staff physicians shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Maria Papadopoulos, who owns Pappas Air Compressions Corp., at the intersection of North Jerusalem and Roxboro Court, said that she and her husband, Bill, were eating lunch when, through their open front door, they saw both vehicles and heard the crash.

She said that Bill ran to the Honda, and then shouted for her to call an ambulance. Her husband wanted to help, she said, “but it was so crushed. There was no way to take the people out.”

Papadopoulos said that both cars were traveling “very fast,” a common problem on North Jerusalem Road.

The truck driver and his passengers were treated for minor injuries and released. Police said he was also issued tickets for being unlicensed and having a suspended license on his record.

Both vehicles were impounded for brake, safety and mechanical inspections. Roxboro Court was closed in both directions for several hours, and North Jerusalem Road was also closed between Newbridge and Bellmore roads.
