Seeking to open a Chick-fil-A outlet at 249-23 Rockaway Blvd. in Woodmere on the former site of a Pizza Hut, representatives from the franchise presented their request for a parking variance at Town of Hempstead Board of Appeals hearing on April 23. The original hearing on April 18, was postponed because of damaged water pipe in town hall.

The building’s location is in Queens, but to build a drive-thru parking spaces beyond the New York City border and in Woodmere need to be excised. John Harter, a traffic engineer, said that after conducting research they found that out of 1,425 total spaces the lot peaks at about 500 occupied parking spots. They were asking for a reduction of 23 spots to build the drive-thru.

Based in Atlanta, Chick-fil-A is known for its sandwiches and founder Samuel Truett Cathy’s conservative Christian beliefs. The franchise does not even open its outlet in Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sunday, when the NFL Falcons are playing a home game.

The board did not yet rule on the application as of press time.

Additionally the zoning board granted an adjournment in the case of Woodruff Construction’s request for exemptions for religious use, including a variance for off-street parking. They will meet again on June 27 to discuss the variances for the site in Inwood, near Redfern Avenue and Doughty Boulevard.

These will include construction of a three-story building and the addition of off-street parking and a special exception to park in the front yard. The original hearing had also been postponed from April 18 due to the damaged water pipe.
