Community holds annual 9/11 ceremony

The glow of candles illuminated the faces—many filled with sorrow—of community members and local leaders who gathered on Monday at sunset to commemorate East Meadow and Salisbury residents who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Gathered at the Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of East Meadow and Prospect avenues, community members held a moment of silence at the 9/11 memorial. Families placed wreaths next to the statue, which reads “In the name of freedom/ To those who lost their lives/ September 11, 2001.”

The 1,800-pound marble statue, which contains a steel beam from the World Trade Center, bears seven names: Ann McGovern, Carlos Dominguez, Stephen Mark Fogel, Stephen LeMantia, Claude “Dan” Richards, Daniel Brethel, and Thomas Patrick DeAngelis. It was erected by the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow during the Sept. 11, 2014 commemoration ceremony.
