EMFD gets in full swing for fire prevention week

Posted

Each year, our nation engages in Fire Prevention Week, a somber learning experience of the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, where approximately 300 people died and roughly 3.3 square miles of the city was destroyed. There has been much speculation over the years about a single start to the fire.

The most popular tale blames Mrs. O'Leary's cow, which allegedly knocked over a lantern; others state that a group of men were gambling inside the barn and knocked over a lantern.

Be that as it may, 148 years later, our nation continues to save lives with a week of fire safety and awareness to ensure everyone does their part, everyday, to protect their home and family.

All week long the members of your East Meadow Volunteer Fire Department have been actively spreading to word of fire safety throughout our community with visits to local elementary schools.

It’s a great way for our children to learn more, and get to meet the great men and women of our organization.

But this Sunday, October 20, (rain or shine), the members of our EMFD will put on their gear, and invite our community to another Fire Prevention Day.

The event will be held at Fire Headquarters, at 197 East Meadow Ave East Meadow, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All residents of our community are invited to join us.

There will be live demonstrations throughout the day on vehicle extrication, what to do when your stove catches fire, medical demonstrations and even a visit by the birthday boy himself “Smokey the Bear”.

The event will be fun for the whole family:

See the ladder trucks and the massive display of equipment, all at the ready, to protect our residents.

Take a ride of a fire engine and feel what a firefighter feels as they respond to a fire.

Fire safety information, handout for the kids, food and drinks, are all compliments of the EMFD.

Thinking about becoming a member? This is a great place to meet with firefighters and medical technicians at our recruitment display to learn more.

It’s a great day to be an EMFD firefighter and see the huge turnout of our community.

Please come and enjoy.
