East Meadow library gears up for Halloween with virtual events

The spookiest time of the year is in full swing at the East Meadow Public Library, which has a number of Halloween-themed programs scheduled throughout October. Guests could learn how to create their own Halloween costumes, paint spooky nail designs and take a virtual tour of Central Park’s haunts and mystical happenings. It all leads up to a Zoom dance party on Oct. 30.

The next scheduled event is set for Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. and includes a viewing and discussion of the Cask of Amontillado from Suspense Theater (1949), starring horror movie icon Bela Lugosi, as part of Keith Crocker’s Pop Culture series. The adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado takes place in WWII Italy.

EmCon, the library’s own anime and pop culture convention, is back with a series of panels inspired by All-Hallows Eve. On Oct. 17 at 12:30 p.m., former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader Diana Portes will lead her Anime Dance Session. Dress up as your favorite cosplay character while you dance and she teaches you some of her moves.

Then at 2:30 p.m., professional cosplayer Rizuki will be hosting her Cosplay Selfie Party. Hangout with Rizuki and get tips and advise on how to improve your costumes in this social group.

Take a virtual tour of Central Park and learn about its mysterious history during The Magic and Mysticism of Central Park with Leanna Renee Hieber, on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. Hieber is an author, actor, playwright and licensed NYC tour guide who will be discussing the 19th century mystical and occult movements, fascinations and obsessions that influenced the origins of the park and its designers as well as many of the mystical structures therein. The event will be replete with a few ghost stories perfect for October.

Expanding Spooky House Drawing is set for Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Get in the Halloween spirit by creating a Halloween drawing that expands to reveal a spooky house with Halloween characters, for first graders and older.

EMCon special guest, voice actor Austin Tindle, will lead a panel on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Tindle is an American voice actor who works for Funimation and Sentai Filmworks. He is best known for voicing the lead role of Crowley Eusford in Seraph of the End, Ken Kaneki in the Tokyo Ghoul series, Kiyoshi Fujino in Prison School, Ayumu Aikawa in Is This a Zombie?, Accelerator in the A Certain Magical Index series, as well as its spinoffs A Certain Scientific Accelerator and A Certain Scientific Railgun S, Karma Akabane in Assassination Classroom, Shu Ouma in Guilty Crown, Marco Bott in Attack on Titan and Leopold Vermillion in Black Clover.

For a great mother and daughter project, join the Halloween Nail Design event on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. No Costume is complete without the right nails and participants could learn from Nail Artist Dana Jones about how to create their own frightful looks. The program comes with one kit for each participant with instructions to prepare for the program.

Monster Cookies with the Baking Coach, on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m., allows guests to transform ordinary chocolate chip cookies into adorable and delicious little monsters. This event, for first graders and older, also provides participants with a kit of supplies to be delivered to your home.

Finally, tune in with your family to the DJ Justin Halloween Anime Zoom Party on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Talk in a group chat while listening to anime and gaming soundtracks, mixed by DJ Justin in this Halloween Zoom party. Wear your costume the night before Halloween and start snacking on some candy early.
