Backyard Wilderness film screening

Those in third through fifth grade are welcome to a film screening of Backyard Wilderness, hosted by the East Meadow Public Library at the Cradle of Aviation on July 18 at 10 a.m. The film will surprise and entertain viewers with the unexpected wonders of nature right under our noses — in our own backyards. Spanning a seasonal year around a suburban home, the film displays a stunning array of unique wildlife images and behavior — all captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests, and moving along the forest floor and pond bottom, to reveal its inhabitants in rare and breathtaking intimacy. The Cradle of Aviation Museum is at Charles Lindenbergh Boulevard in Garden City. Don’t miss the companion program at The Hempstead Plains on July 25 at 10 a.m.

The fun starts at 11 a.m. at Forrest City Community Park, located at 3099 Morgan Drive in Wantagh. This event is free for Chamber and Kiwanis members and their family — bring your own booze.

Evening Book Discussion: American Marriage by Tayari Jones

Come enjoy this book discussion of American Marriage by Tayari Jones, hosted by the East Meadow Public Library at the East Meadow Jewish Center on July 23 at 7:30 p.m. Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But, as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. The East Meadow Jewish Center is located at 1400 Prospect Avenue in East Meadow. Please do not bring food into the building.
