Lions Club holds 26th annual flea market

Hundreds of curious and thrifty shoppers flocked to the Hendrickson Park Pool parking lot on Saturday, Sept. 14 in search of hidden treasure at the Valley Stream Lions Club’s 26th annual flea market.

Roughly two dozen vendors set up booths, selling a dizzying array of items from toys, to used electronics, beauty products, decorations and clothes, all at bargain prices, and funds raised from the market support the Lions’ charitable causes worldwide.

“The flea market raised money for different charities, scholarships and other causes, while raising awareness of who the Lions Club is and what they represent,” said David Basile, a longtime member of the Valley Stream Lions Club. “This was a really nice community event, that brings good spirit, influences people to get involved and brings the community together.”

The Lions Club is an international non-profit, originally founded in 1917, which raises and donates money to charitable causes. Among the causes the Lions support include disaster relief as well as aid for the blind and deaf.

In Valley Stream, the local Lions Club holds fundraisers such as the flea market to support these causes, and proceeds were generated from vendors who pay a fee to reserve a spot at the market.
