A banner raising season

Posted

It was a banner season for many high school sports teams within the Herald’s coverage area. Here are the Herald’s picks for the Top 10 team accomplishments, in chronological order.

1. Long Beach girls volleyball
Throughout the season in practice, Long Beach’s girls’ volleyball team simulated playing in a fifth and decisive set with a coveted Nassau County title on the line. On Nov. 7, premonition became reality for the Lady Marines and coach Kerri Rehnback after they squandered four match points in the fourth set against defending Class A champion South Side. Krista Heidenfelder, Justine Smith, Dakota O’Neill, Mary McDonagh, Perri Steiner, Julianna Zaharias, Alex Price and Gabby Ayzenberg persevered and brought home the program’s first-ever county championship with a 25-9, 18-25, 25-15, 26-28, 25-19 victory. Smith had 30 assists, O’Neill had 21 digs, and Price, McDonagh, and Steiner combined for 22 kills.

2. Kennedy boys volleyball
Pick a number, any number, and it’s sure to be an impressive one with regard to Kennedy’s boys’ volleyball team. Want championships? The team captured its second consecutive Long Island Class B title Nov. 9 with a sweep of Sayville (25-23, 25-18, 25-20), just three days after winning its fifth Nassau County championship in the last six seasons with a three-set win over Long Beach. If raw victories are the measure of success, consider that the Cougars’ (20-0 overall) win over Sayville stretched their winning streak to 43 straight. Coach by Dennis Ringel, Kennedy’s road to the Long Island title was paved by Gary Anderson, who registered 17 kills, 17 assists, and a dozen digs.
