It was a great day for golfers of all skill levels on Monday, when the Village of Lynbrook and its Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the annual Mayor’s Golf Classic at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor.

The event included breakfast, awards and special recognition for the top team, prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin, and an awards dinner in the evening. Three notable Lynbrook residents were honored at the dinner: Denise Rogers, of Astoria Bank; Kevin Bien, of the Lynbrook Fire Department; and Dr. Steven Mendelsohn, of Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology in Lynbrook.

“It was a fantastic day,” said Mayor Bill Hendrick. “Everyone came together on behalf of the Lynbrook Community Chest and had a great time in participating. The individuals that were honored were certainly deserving and have given so much time and again to our community, and that just proves that Lynbrook is a true family, and continues to be a great place to live.”

The event is a major fundraiser for the Community Chest, a charitable organization that strives to meet the needs of local disadvantaged people. Its members provide assistance to Lynbrook residents who need financial help. Since its inception, they have donated thousands of dollars and devoted hundred of hours to struggling families.

The awardees

Rogers, the branch manager at Astoria Bank’s Lynbrook branch, grew up in Rockville Centre but is a longtime resident of Lynbrook. Since joining the bank in 1994 as a part-time teller, she has built a rewarding career in banking and played an active role in the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce, having served as its president, vice president of membership and executive vice president. She supports many charitable organizations, such as the American Heart Association and the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. Rogers and her husband, Tom, have three children, Thomas, 16, Christopher 14, and Adela, 11.

Mendelsohn is the medical director of Zwanger-Pesiri. Certified by the American Board of Radiology since 1984, he was chairman of the Department of Radiology at the North Shore University Hospital in Plainview from 1992 through 2002.
