East Rockaway Pep rally, parade and Homecoming game planned for this weekend

Posted

East Rockaway High School will hold its annual pep rally on Friday, Sept. 19 in coordination with the Village’s Stars and Stripes Festival.

The celebration will begin with a parade at starting at the Capital One bank parking lot on the corner of Baisley Avenue at 6:30 p.m., and then continue down to the high school gym for the pep rally at 7 p.m.

The annual Louis Cosenza Scholarship Game will be held Sat., Sept. 20, at East Rockaway High School. The Rocks will play Seaford at 2 p.m. at Hermanson Field at East Rockaway High School.

All proceeds will go to the Cosenza Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is given to a senior who has excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field.

This scholarship is in memory of Louis Cosenza, who was a health/physical education teacher at East Rockaway High School when he was stricken with leukemia in 1971, when Cosenza, an outstanding teacher, class advisor and coach, was 31 years old. He taught at ERHS for six years.

Cosenza excelled in sports. He earned a full scholarship to Adelphi University for soccer and also played baseball.

In addition to his athletic prowess, he was an honor student throughout high school and college. He later played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals before entering the teaching field.

Aside from being a top scholar/athlete, said Athletic Director Dom Vulpis, Cosenza was a role model to his students and his colleagues. In 1977, the Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund was set up in his name for the benefit of the top scholar athlete, male or female, at East Rockaway High School.

All donations can be sent to East Rockaway High School, 443 Ocean Ave., East Rockaway, N.Y. 11518 in care of Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to East Rockaway High School.

And don’t forget to come to the game to root for your home team!
