Centerport man arrested in East Rockaway

A Centerport man was arrested on July 2 for a string of crimes that ended in East Rockaway, the Nassau County Police Department said.

According to police, Adam Tweedie, 31, of Fort Salonga Road, used a cement block to break the front glass door of Chuck’s Auto at 157 Franklin Ave. on Saturday, July 2 at 6:52 a.m., and later fled without any proceeds. A few minutes later, police said Tweedie slipped through an opening in a fence at Pinnacle Contracting at 252 Franklin Ave. but again fled without any proceeds. According to police, Tweedie then stole a 2014 Nissan Altima that was left running on Franklin Avenue and fled in the vehicle.

While driving southbound on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway, police said he struck a utility pole and collided with a northbound Ford Fusion sedan at approximately 7:05 a.m. He then fled the scene of the accident foot, according to police.

At about 8 a.m., police said Tweedie entered Minute Man Dry Cleaners at 89 Ocean Ave. and stole cash from the register before fleeing on foot. Tweedie was located by 5th Precinct officers and placed under arrest at about 10:13 a.m. on Main Street. He had keys to the Nissan and cash from the dry cleaner in his possession, police said. No injuries were reported from the accident.

Tweedie is charged with two counts of third degree burglary, third degree grand larceny, third degree criminal possession of stolen property, third degree criminal trespass and leaving the scene of an accident. He was arraigned on Sunday, July 3 at First District Court in Hempstead.c
