Dorothy Jackson, formerly of Lynbrook, died peacefully on April 3. She was 83.

Born Dorothy Helen Jensen in Brooklyn, she was a big Brooklyn Dodgers fan. She earned her Master’s degree in Mathematics at Adelphi University, and worked as an engineer. She was also a member of Mensa, an organization for gifted individuals.

Dorothy was a ballroom dance instructor at Arthur Murray, where she met her future husband. They married in 1959 and moved to Lynbrook, where she became member of Christ Episcopal Church until she moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1988, due to health concerns.

Upon arriving in Arizona, Dorothy, a right-leg amputee as a result of a vascular disorder, began searching for an amputee support group. Unable to find one, she started one herself, and it grew to more than 100 members. She earned an award for this achievement.

“We are very proud of her for this,” said her son, Kenneth Jackson. “She was also quite talented at all forms of stitchery, and even taught it for several years.”

In Arizona, Dorothy enjoyed watching both local baseball and basketball.

Besides Kenneth, who lives in Lynbrook, Dorothy is survived by another son, Charles, of Washington State, and grandson Robert, Kenneth’s son, who lives in Plainview.
