East Meadow approves full-day kindergarten

Posted

Full-day kindergarten is coming to East Meadow.

Voters passed a $195.8 million budget proposition on Tuesday that exceeded the East Meadow School District’s tax levy cap and included full-day kindergarten, by a vote of 4,019 to 2,048 (66 percent approval). The measure needed a 60 percent supermajority to pass.

Residents had to decide between preserving the current half-day kindergarten program, as part of a smaller budget (Proposition One), or exceeding the tax levy cap (Proposition Two). Proposition One, which totaled $192.8 million, also passed with 77 percent of the vote, but will not be implemented, since the larger spending plan was also approved.

Board of Education Trustee Brian O’Flaherty defeated challenger Adam Sackowitz, 2,752 to 2,470, while Melissa Tell unseated Trustee Walter Skinner by just 32 votes, 2,608 to 2,576.
