An East Rockaway man was arrested for attempting to steal ice cream from a convenience store in Lawrence at 4:38 a.m. on Sept. 15, police said.

A cashier at the 7-Eleven on Rockaway Turnpike saw a man trying to hide several Haagen-Daz ice cream containers and leave the store without paying, according to police.

As the man tried to leave, the cashier, also a man, sought to stop him and was hit in the face with a closed fist which caused swelling to his left eye, police said.

A canine patrol officer saw the struggle. He placed the man, Peter Brown, 49, of Plainview Avenue, into custody without incident. The cashier refused medical treatment at the scene.

Brown is charged with robbery-second degree.
