Fire commissioner seeks your vote

To the Editor:

My name is William Field and I have been representing you for the last 20 years as your commissioner in the Wantagh Fire District. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, residents of the Wantagh Fire District will be called upon to vote for the position of fire commissioner and I am seeking your support.

The Board of Fire Commissioners is comprised of five members, one of whom seeks election annually. The board is an administrative body that supervises the administrative and financial activities of the Fire District.

The job, although entirely volunteer and without salary, oversees the expenditure of approximately $6.5 million. The money goes for fire and medical protection and provides for training of our firefighters and fire medics. In addition, the position oversees the purchasing and maintenance of the equipment and apparatus to better serve the needs of the Wantagh Fire District.

I am a 60-year resident of Wantagh, where I reside with my wife, Susan. We have been married for 34 years and have three adult sons, Bill, Brian and Brad. I attended C.W. Post, where I graduated upon earning a bachelor’s degree. My recent retirement as sergeant from the Nassau County Police Department, where I served for 29 years, has allowed me to dedicate even more time to this position.

I have been active for 42 years with the Wantagh Fire Department. I have served as a firefighter and have worked my way through the ranks as lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief of the department. In addition, I have served on many committees and been an active participant in many professional fire organizations.

As your fire commissioner for the past 20 years, I have been involved in forecasting the emergency service needs of our community and managing the financial resources of the district.
