The 10th annual recipient of the Joshua L. Brandon Memorial Music Scholarship was Samantha Lee of West Hempstead High School — a scholarship started by Bay Park resident Brian Barry.

Samantha was very involved in the music program at the high school where she was involved in theatre production and chorus. She was a member of the mixed chorus and chamber choir where she served as president for both organizations. She also volunteered and mentored students that were involved in the middle school drama program.

Holding numerous roles in the school’s theatrical productions during her time at WHH, as a senior she was ultimately cast as Velma VanTussle in “Hairspray,” where she led the ensemble.

During her senior year, she also conducted a service-learning project on the importance of music education throughout schools. She is continuing to pursue music in college. In addition to her music she was involved actively in the community giving freely of her time to her peers and the neighborhood.

About the scholarship

Barry, a Bay Park, East Rockaway resident and educator, with the help of the then-West Hempstead School Superintendent Carol Eisenberg, established the Joshua L. Brandon Memorial Music In November 2005. The award gives one graduating senior $300 each June, presented at Senior Awards Night.

In order to be considered for the annual scholarship the student must have a letter or recommendation from one teacher, be in good academic standing, and must write an essay explaining their involvement in the local community and school — as well as their activities in music, art, film, acting and the performing arts. The student must also be going to college or university at a two or four year program majoring in music, art, film, communications, fine arts, performing arts, theater, literature, or any related field.

A committee made up of educators, community members, and friends of the late Josh Brandon reads the applications. A vote is made and the majority vote selects the winner each year.
