School board like a ‘petulant child’

To the Editor:

I am absolutely astounded at the response, dare I say the reaction, to the non-passing of the $45 million bond that was put forth by the board in the Lynbrook school district.

Before the special election, I received phone calls, fliers and newspapers mailed to me about the campaign to sponsor a bond to upgrade the high school. Yet somehow, the folks who were on the side of spending that kind of crazy money were disappointed at the turn out and the “no” vote that resulted. The money already spent on architects and surveys is more than what should have been spent.

Now they want to redraft the bond and put it up again? How many more times? No is no!

The school board is like a petulant child: “Please, oh please, can we have a turf field?” “Please, oh please can we have new music room?” Come on — that’s not how democracy works. All those who want to upgrade the auditorium and add practice rooms for the chorus, and those people who signed the petition, should be out selling boosters and fundraising for what they want. That cost should not be on the backs of the community, in particular senior citizens and families who don’t have children in the schools — and certainly not $45 million!

The apathy in the district is ridiculous, and it always has been. You get a few folks who run with it for the four years that their kids are in high school, and then they fall off the face of the earth. They don’t think about what their future taxes are going to be. Take a look back and see how many times the taxes have increased. The school district remains competitive, and continues to produce students who are college-ready, and with a good, solid education and plenty of extra-curricular activities. Enough about the children — it’s about your pocketbook sometimes!

Opponents of McGrath are ‘desperate’

To the Editor:

Sorry, Alex Costello, Chris McGrath never said Todd Kaminsky voted against Assembly Bill A-7704 (“Kaminsky: Budget should have addressed corruption,” April 7-13).
