Last Saturday the members of Lynbrook American Legion Post 335 honored Lynbrook hero Jeffrey L. Wiener, a US Navy Corpsman was killed in battle in Iraq in 2005.

on Nov. 30, 2010, by an Act of Congress, the Lynbrook Post Office was named in Wiener’s honor — but the plaque hanging in the post office only lists his name and not who Wiener was or what he did. So the American Legion had a plaque made that will now also be displayed in the post office, along with Jeff’s photograph, to let the residents know that he was a Lynbrook High School graduate, a Lynbrook volunteer firefighter and paramedic, and a Navy Corpsman who was killed in action.

At the ceremony on Saturday, held on the steps of the Lynbrook Library next to the post office, Jeff’s daughters Mikayla and Theodora unveiled the new plaque as Wiener’s wife, Maria, and mother Diana, along with other members of the Wiener and Barbario families looked on.

A contingent from the US Naval Sea Cadets provided the color guard for the ceremony. Also present were members of Tally-Ho Engine Company 3 of the Lynbrook Fire Department where Wiener was an Ex-Captain before joining the military.

Assemblyman Brian Curran, Lynbrook Mayor William Hendrick and Deputy Mayor Alan Beach, Trustee Ann Marie Reardon, along with representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corp League, also attended.
