Lynbrook letter carriers help stamp out hunger

Posted

Lynbrook letter carriers marked the 24th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive held by the National Association of Letter Carriers on Saturday, May 14. The event is the largest one-day nationwide food collection effort involving 10,000 cities and towns.

The Lynbrook Post Office participated in the event by collecting the non-perishable food items donated by postal customers and by donating many food items themselves. This food drive is unique because postal customers are asked to leave the food items they wish to donate next to their mailboxes and the items are picked up with the regular mail delivery. Letter carriers utilized the months and weeks ahead by reaching out to their local mail route customers and making sure that they knew about the event and how to participate.

This year’s haul was donated in its entirety to Island Harvest, a non-profit organization that provides food to over 316,000 struggling long islanders who are at risk of going hungry. Lynbrook letter carriers donated a total of 6 pallet boxes full of food items. According to Lynbrook Post Master Carol Koch, this event “wouldn’t be successful without the public helping us get to this point.”
