Paying it forward to South Carolina

Calling on East Rockaway residents and others to help

Posted

Last Saturday, the East Rockaway High School Builders Club accepted donations from the community at the oval in front of the school on Ocean Avenue for the victims of the recent flooding in South Carolina. A group of volunteers plan to bring the aid to them by truck next week. This Saturday, they will be doing the same.
The students collected cleaning supplies, bedding, and non-perishable food, paper goods, bottled water and plastic bins (see box for complete list).
The people of South Carolina are still under water in some parts and need help. The students in the Builder’s Club at East Rockaway High School, along with some of the community members have put together a great plan of action to fill a very large truck, donated by Owens Truckmen, of Lynbrook, to get some much needed supplies to the people of South Carolina as soon as possible.
According to teacher Don Poland, the first collection day went awesome. “It was very cathartic and emotional day for many donators,” he said. “Countless people recounted their personal Sandy flooding story as they delivered their relief supplies. We will do it again this Saturday and leave afterward. The Owens family (with eight ERHS alumni) is donating a truck and a driver to deliver all of the relief aid. The Oceanside Jewish Center is also involved.”
