Rocks fall to Oyster Bay

Posted

Oyster Bay defeated East Rockaway, 8-6, in a Conference BC baseball game on April 28. The game was close throughout, with Oyster Bay winning on a late rally. Evan Mattel’s three-run triple in the sixth inning broke a tie.

East Rockaway took an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second, and held it for most of the game. Oyster Bay would fight back, however. After stranding three men on base in the top of the fifth, Oyster Bay got the bases loaded again in the sixth, and this time they cashed in on the opportunity. They would score five runs in the inning, including three on a Mattel’s hit, to take an 8-5 lead. East Rockaway would score one in the bottom of the sixth, but the deficit would prove to be too much as the Baymen finished off the game with the tying run at the plate for East Rockaway.

The Rocks, who won five of their first six games to start the year, have lost five straight and stand at 6-7 overall with five games to play. Coach James Hickey’s team leaders include Nick Ippolito, who has three wins on the mound, and Michael DelGais, who has two wins and a couple of homers.

East Rockaway’s victories came against West Hempstead, Lawrence, Hempstead, Westbury, Elmont and Malverne. The Rocks begin their final regular-season three-game series next Monday at home versus Wheatley at 4:30 p.m.
