Rosh HaShanah 5777

Posted

In our tradition there is a special prayer that begins by recalling the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the Jewish People: “God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Isaac and Rebecca, God of Jacob, Rachel and Leah.” In this prayer we symbolically acknowledge that what we are today, the values that we espouse, and the traditions that we live by, we owe to those who came before us and taught us. We are the spiritual descendants of generation upon generation of those who sought and found God. Many today in our communities are seeking, but have not yet found, a spiritually satisfying connection to God.

I have met many people over the years who express a sense of “disconnect” that stems from their professed lack of belief in God. I am convinced, however, that they share with many of us a profound belief in something spiritual, while rejecting the definitions of God that have been offered them. Like those who came before us, we have the privilege of seeking a conception of God that will enable our generation to feel spiritually fulfilled and connected to the generations that have gone before us and to the Godliness that can be found in our midst. In the New Year that is about to begin, filled with promise and hope, may we all find God in the search for peace, the seeking of cures for illnesses that threaten us, and the building of relationships that will enable us to love and be loved.

As we begin the New Year of 5777 we send best wishes for a year of sweetness and goodness from our family at Central Synagogue - Beth Emeth to your family.
