I Grew Up In East Rockaway

I grew up in East Rockaway, just about a block away
From an old brick movie theater we got in for a dime.
Before they’d start that movie show, the candy counter’s where I’d go.
And I get me some Necco wafers for that magic carpet ride
To the Land of Oz
Or to Brigadoon.
We saw movie stars
Gene Kelley and Judy Garland dance and croon. (“Singin’ In The Rain”)
e had St. Raymond’s Catholic School, Rhame and Centre Avenue.
That’s where we learned to read and write and where we met our friends.
Somehow time went flying by: kindergarten, senior high.
Here it is 2013 but I still remember when
 We were Mouseketeers.
 “I’m Karen.” “I’m Cubby!” “I’m Annette!”
 From our childhood years
All we have is mem’ries shared with friends we’ll never forget.
Fifty years have come and gone. Here we are, all standing on
The very ground we grew on. It’s a mighty special day.
And who’s to say? I could be wrong, but maybe I’ll get to sing this song
At our next class reunion five to twenty years away.
I grew up in East Rockaway, just about a block away
From an old brick movie theater we got in for a dime.
