East Rockaway voters have approved its school district’s 2015-16 proposed budget of $37,994,804 million, a 1.88 percent increase over the current spending plan, with a vote of 515 in favor, and 198 against.

The tax levy increase is 1.58 percent, the smallest increase in 14 years. The approved plan will maintain all academic and extracurricular programs while adding two new teachers to academic intervention services and one state-mandated ESL teacher, and introducing one-on-one computer tablets and a new college-level architecture course.

Proposition 2 passed with a vote of 466 to 137. Proposition 3 passed with a vote of 465 to 151.

These Propositions allow the use of $200,000 from each of the district’s capital reserve funds for building improvements and technology. The money from the building fund is earmarked for district-wide improvements, including window repair or replacement and security enhancements, and installation of an electronic sign at the high school. The technology upgrades would include purchases or upgrades, and telecommunications equipment and hardware.

John Giannotti Jr. was elected to a second term on the East Rockaway Board of Education with 541 votes.

“Thank you to the East Rockaway community for once again supporting our budget," said school superintendent Lisa Ruiz."The Board of Education and administration worked diligently to develop a fiscally responsible budget within the tax levy cap that continues our many excellent programs while adding a number of enhancements which will further support our students’ achievement. Congratulations to John Giannotti, Jr. on his reelection.”
