Sherman attorney questions evidence

During a routine pre-trial hearing, Maxwell Sherman’s defense attorney called into questions the validity of some of the DNA evidence against his client used to charge him in the murder of Lauren Daverin-Gresham last summer.

As reported in Newsday, William Petrillo, Sherman’s attorney, said that the prosecution rushed the handling of the DNA evidence in order to more quickly secure and indictment against Sherman. The Long Beach resident was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault.

“Newsday’s article describes fairly routine matters that come up in just about any case,” said Shams Tarek, director of communications for Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

Sherman allegedly strangled Daverin-Gresham on a footbridge that goes over Merrick Road in Rockville Centre and sexually assaulted her. She was found nude and in a pool of blood by friends on Aug. 22, 2013.
