Elmont students are ready to learn

Excitement was in the air when Elmont Union Free School District students arrived for their first day of school on Sept. 7.

Educators at all six elementary schools - Alden Terrace, Clara H. Carlson, Covert Avenue, Dutch Broadway, Gotham Avenue and Stewart Manor - welcomed students for what promises to be a wonderful new year of academic learning.

At Clara H. Carlson School, Principal Stacia Walfall, Assistant Principals Richard Mansfield and Amanda Sagnelli, and building teachers were outside to greet students and help direct them to their respective classrooms.

"What a beautiful first day," Walfall said. "It is an honor to begin my new role as principal. Carlson is where my heart lies and I consider it the perfect opportunity and place to do the most important work in the world. There is no better place to be, and witnessing the smiles on the faces of the staff, parents and students lets me know this is going to be a fantastic year."

Superintendent of Schools Al Harper also welcomed students to school and wished them well in the upcoming year. The children were smiling, carrying backpacks chock full of school supplies as they entered the building.

Throughout the district, students had an opportunity to get to know their teachers and classmates through a variety of activities. They also learned about their daily schedules and got acclimated to their new surroundings. District students have "a lot to look forward to this year, including a new 1:1 initiative that provides iPads to all third-graders and their teachers," school officials said.
