Democrat Judy Griffin upset Assemblyman Brian Curran, a Republican from Lynbrook, in the 21st A.D. on election night.

“I’m thankful that Nassau County recognized that we could do much better,” Griffin told a crowd of about 300 at the Garden City Hotel Tuesday night.

Griffin, a Rockville Centre community activist and former director of community outreach for State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, took 53 percent of the vote to unseat Curran.

Curran posted on Facebook early Wednesday morning, "Unfortunately, tonight did not turn out the way that I wanted. However, I wanted to thank the people of this district for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to represent them in the New York State Assembly for the past 8 years."

Kaminsky, a Democrat from Long Beach, easily defeated Republican challenger Francis X. Becker, of Lynbrook, to keep his seat in the 9th S.D. Kaminsky earned 62 percent of the vote to Becker’s 38. The Democrats won enough seats to earn a majority in the State Senate.

"I feel euphoric," Kaminsky said. "I've been working really hard for this with people throughout the state and I'm glad to work with them in the majority."

Democratic U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice secured a third term in the 4th Congressional District, defeating Republican Ameer Benno, taking 61 percent of the vote to Benno’s 39.

State Sen. John Brooks, of Seaford, defeated Republican Jeff Pravato to win a second term in the 8th Senate District, which includes Baldwin Harbor, earning 53 percent of the vote to Pravato’s 47.

Taylor Raynor, a Democrat from Uniondale, defeated Republican James Lamarre, of Lakeville, in the 18th A.D. Raynor, who defeated longtime Assemblywoman Earlene Hooper in the September Democratic primary, earned 86 percent of the vote to Lamarre’s 9.
