Lightning strikes East Rockaway house, starts fire

A house on Williamson Street in East Rockaway caught fire on Aug. 18, as a thunderstorm swept through Long Island.

According to a Facebook post on the East Rockaway Fire Department’s page, the department received a call about a transformer fire and a house fire at a residential home that was struck by lightning. Second Assistant Chief Jack Felbinger was the first at the scene, and saw a fire on the roof.

Members of Engine 404 and Ladder 403 arrived shortly later, and crews searched the structure and began to extinguish the fire with help from members of Engine 405 and Engine 406. Members of the Oceanside Fire Department also provided assistance.

No injuries were reported.
