Voters in the Island Park School District on Tuesday voted to approve officials' proposed $40.3 million budget for the 2019-20 school year, and also showed support for an incumbent trustee who ran unopposed for the Board of Education.

The budget was approved, 238 "yes" votes to 185 "no" selections. The spending plan will set money aside for new English Language Arts program materials, technology upgrades, the purchase of Chromebooks for classroom use and the introduction of new literacy, reading and writing programs for all grade levels. It also includes high school tuition for Long Beach and West Hempstead high schools, busing to high school, BOCES and private schools and the purchase of one school bus for $60,000.

Voters also approved Proposition 2, 343 to 85, which will enable officials to enter a five-year contract with Long Beach High School to send Island Park students there for secondary education.

Board of Education Trustee Tara Byrne received 331 votes to retain her seat in an uncontested race. She has served on the board for five years.
