Lynbrook, East Rockaway villages dealing with winter storm

Posted

As the second nor'easter in less than a week hit Nassau County, village officials in Lynbrook and East Rockaway were preparing for the heavy wintry mix of snow and rain.

East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said village workers were getting set to deal with the storm over the last two days, as plows and spreaders were prepped by the Department of Public Works. Officials also made sure fuel was in full supply in all village buildings and that the East Rockaway Fire Department had its firehouses equipped with backup generators in the event of power outages.

"The Department of Public Works has approximately 25 full-time and part-time employees ready to respond for snow removal," Romano said. "They have 400 tons of treated salt and sand, as well as salt mix to de-ice roadways.”

Romano added that the village owns a high-water military vehicle that is equiped to handle flooding, which was recently refurbished.

Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach said the village has 12 sanitation trucks on the road, which were salting and sanding the streets before the storm and would continue to throughout the night.

"Once again, we are asking residents to keep their cars off the streets to allow plows to clear the roadways," Beach said.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Nassau on Wednesday. Snow and a slushy mix of freezing rain began to fall at around 2 p.m. The weather service predicted that accumulations could reach four inches, with more to follow overnight. Wind gusts to 25 miles per hour were expected.

The East Rockaway and Lynbrook school districts canceled classes and after school activities for Wednesday.
