Lynbrook Excellence in Education Foundation to host movie screening

Lynbrook residents have the opportunity to go the movies and raise money for the Lynbrook School District at The Lynbrook Excellence in Education Foundation, Inc.’s inaugural Charity Movie Night on Nov 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Ivy Reilly, the president of the foundation, rented out a theatre at Regal Cinemas 13, on Merrick Road, for attendees to watch “The Crimes of Grindelwald” during its opening weekend. In the latest “Harry Potter”-based movie, Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander try to thwart Gellert Grindelwald’s plan to have pureblood wizards rule over all non-magical beings. The movie is rated PG-13.

“We just wanted to do something family friendly and support a local business,” Reilly said.

To organize the event, Reilly worked with the Regal Cinemas Corporation to rent out a theatre for a private screening. A portion of the ticket purchase will help raise funds for the EREF.

But, Reilly said, the goal of the event is really to make residents aware of the foundation. She revitalized the organization in the spring to raise funds for “self-sustaining” programs in the Lynbrook School District, such as professional development training for the staff.

In June, the organization’s nonprofit status was reinstated, and it can now collect funds from Amazon Smile, which enables Amazon shoppers to donate a fraction of their purchase to a nonprofit organization of their choice. By the end of the year, Reilly said, teachers in the district can start requesting funds for different projects.

“We’re going to be much more visible now,” she said. “So I think that’s going to be helpful for us to show what we’re trying to do.”

She also said that anyone who would like to be considered a founding member could do so by donating $100 or more to the organization by Dec. 7.
