Lynbrook Kiwanis to host pancake fundraiser

Posted

Before Lynbrook children have the opportunity to ride around on fire trucks on Dec. 15, they and their parents will be welcome to enjoy an inexpensive breakfast at Lynbrook High School’s annual Holiday Pancake Breakfast, which is hosted by the school’s Key Club and the Lynbrook Kiwanis Club.

“We thought ‘Have breakfast first, then ride your fire trucks,’” said Denise Rogers, the president of Lynbrook Kiwanis.

The organization is hosting the event to raise money for the Mayor William Hendrick Key Club Scholarship Fund, Lynbrook High School Key Club events and for overall high school events. The scholarship fund was dedicated to the memory of the late Hendrick, who died in October 2017.

Jennifer Derrig, the vice president of the Kiwanis Club, said that the organization helps the Key Club pay for bus tickets to events and has previously donated funds to purchase caps and gowns for Lynbrook High School seniors in need.

“Everything that the Lynbrook Kiwanis does goes back to the community,” Rogers said.

To raise the money, members of Lynbrook Kiwanis are asking local businesses to buy advertisements in the menus. “That way you see advertisements for local businesses when you’re sitting down eating breakfast,” Derrig said.

Members of the Lynbrook High School Key Club will also be selling raffle tickets, serving food and cleaning up the cafeteria after the event, according to Ben Tieniber, the adviser for the group.

“It’s nice to see our community and our students working together,” he said.

This is the first year the Lynbrook Kiwanis Club is hosting the Holiday Pancake Breakfast. The club took it over from the Five Towns Kiwanis, which ran the fundraiser for three years when it sponsored the Lynbrook High School Key Club. The Five Towns Kiwanis will be hosting its own pancake breakfast later in the month.

Lynbrook’s annual Holiday Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Lynbrook High School cafeteria. Tickets cost $5 for adults and students, and $3 for children under the age of 12.
