Nassau County police arrested a Florida man on Aug. 3 in connection with breaking into a home on South Williams Street in Lynbrook and for a similar crime in Hewlett.

According to police, Jordan Whitfield, 24, of Lakeland, Fla., was taken into custody for the crimes, which occurred on July 31. Detectives said that Whitfield ransacked a Lynbrook homeowner’s vehicle, which was parked in their driveway, at 1:53 a.m. He removed the garage door opener and used it to get into the house, police said, and the sound of the garage door opening prompted the 53-year-old homeowner to wake up.

Upon seeing the suspect in the hallway, police said the homeowner then chased the man out of the house through the garage.

No injuries were reported and police were unsure if any items were stolen. Police did not reveal the identity of the homeowner

Police said a subsequent investigation revealed that Whitfield also entered another car on Kent Drive in Hewlett on July 31, removed the keys from the console and backed the car into a victim's gate before he drove off.

Whitfield is charged with burglary in the second degree, third-degree grand larceny and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. He was due to be arraigned on Aug. 4 at the First District Court in Hempstead.
