New York American Water is undertaking an $825,000 project to install new water mains in East Rockaway.

The work will replace about 3,400 feet of 8-inch ductile iron water mains, five fire hydrants and 70 service lines. The project was scheduled to begin on Oct. 6 and work will be done to replace pipes on Baisley Avenue from Main Street to Franklin Street, on Adams Street from Baisley Avenue to First Street and on Dart Street from Baisley Avenue to Smith Street.

“New York American Water works proactively to ensure water quality and reliability for our customers at all times,” said Carmen Tierno, president of NYAW, in a release. “Each infrastructure project begins after a careful evaluation and an allocation of our available resources to areas which exhibit the greatest need. These areas within East Rockaway have been prioritized due to the old age of the pipes in the ground. This work will help prevent water distribution problems in the future.”

Sections of the streets where the work is being done may be closed to traffic between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday and the work is expected to take three weeks to complete. The main replacement project will improve water quality and service reliability for residents, representatives of NYAW said.

“The Village of East Rockaway welcomes this positive investment in our utility infrastructure,” Mayor Bruno Romano said. “... Our Department of Public Works looks forward to partnering with NYAW to minimize this project’s impact on drivers and people traversing the village on the roads during they three weeks of their work.”
