Hundreds raised for ex-chief through haircuts

More than 100 local residents cycled through The Shop in Elmont on Dec. 12 for "Haircuts for Elmont Firefighter Richard Schriefer," a fundraiser for a Franklin Square resident and ex-chief of the Elmont Fire Department. Hundreds of dollars were raised during the event for Schriefer, 37, who has been battling brain cancer since it was diagnosed in July. more

Planting his feet in Elmont

Carl Achille has decided to make Elmont home — for good. An Elmont native, Achille left the community eight years ago, when he joined the Army and served in Iraq, and he has since returned, obtained a degree and, last weekend, opened a business. more
