A new playground for Hegarty

Francis X. Hegarty School students and staff joined school officials and guests to cut a red ribbon and open a new playground at the school Sept. 25, in a ceremony highlighted by a performance of “Happy” by the school’s Select Ensemble.

The playground was made possible by the New York District of Kiwanis, the Island Park Kiwanis Club, Barnum Woods Elementary School in East Meadow, Cantiague Elementary School in Jericho, Gardner’s Avenue Elementary School in Levittown, Great Hollow Middle School in Nesconset, Searingtown Elementary School in New Hyde Park and MacArthur High School in Levittown, which raised the money to fund it through donations. Students sold candy bars and took part in other fundraising activities.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy destroyed the Hegarty schoolyard and everything in it, including an old playground.

Island Park Schools Superintendent Dr. Rosmarie Bovino thanked all involved, especially the children, for their generosity.
